brendan's blogMay 6thYesterday afternoon was pretty fun in DDH. Nice glass off, at about rib-high. Just looked at it this morning, and contrary to what the forecasts were calling for, it has actually dropped a little bit. Damn! I was dreaming of head-high glass this morning. High tide at three this afternoon. Kinda bummed. Still ridable though. May 4thStill nothing coming in at Dadonghai yet, although the wind has definitely swung south. Really hoping it does what the forecast says, and gets some okay size over the next few days. I need a good surf for sure. May 3rdFun waves out in Houhai yesterday, at about belly-high on the set. Mostly closing out after a lucky shoulder, but then reforming for lots of longboard rides all the way into the beach. A bot smaller for today and tomorrow in Houhai. By Wednesday, we get to suf in Dadonghai again as we get a decent sized south swell coming in. Peaking on Thursday at a 1.5 meter swell, which should transform into some shoulder-high waves here. Stoked. April 30thThe last day of a pretty decent month of surf. These transition months can bring good surf, provided you can be flexible and on it at the right times. For those of you coming down for the holiday weekend, we have belly-high surf in Houhai for the weekend into Tuesday. Then it switches south. If you'd like to come on one of our trips, let us know. April 27thSmall waves out in Houhai, but that's about it. It rained heavily this morning and now it is bright and sunny. The forecast isn't looking too good for those of you coming down for the May holiday. Small stuff. It might switch sotuh for Sunday the 2nd though. It would be fun to get some sunny Dadonghai waves. When it's flat, we paddle. Matt and I are going out in a minute. Our first since last Thursday. Over a month into it, it can be easy to lose the drive, but Matt is good at motivating us to go. April 24thIndeed our south swell did die out. Yesterday had tiny little waves, and today Dadonghai was completely flat. We've got a little east swell going on now, probably one of the last for this season. Tomorrow is the Houhai Beach Clean Up. The bus is leaving at 10 AM from Surfing Hainan. We'll spend a few hours cleaning up all the rubbish, and then hopefully get in the water for a bit of a surf. Looking forward to it. I really hope we can have an affect on how the locals deal with their trash. It is really depressing to see villagers just take their garbage down to the water line at night. Hainan's future depends on it being clean and pristine. April 22Surfed the XDH right yesterday. About chest-high, some really nice peelers coming through. It was a super full tide, which made it a bit crumbly, but also nice to have some padding on top of the reef there. Think we're headed back in the afternoon. I'm gonna take a SUP out, see how that goes. April 20thThe south swell started to come in by the afternoon. Some small but ridable waves in the belly-high range. Look for it to be a bit bigger tomorrow. Love them south swells. April 19thThis last east swell got pretty decent, from what a few mates up in Riyuewan said. Not a whole lot of size, but the main point there was working pretty well. By tomorrow, it should switch south. More Dadonghai waves! It still gets me pumped. It doesn't look like this will be as good as the last south swell that came through last week, but it should get up to at least chest-high. It looks to last a good four or five days. Sanya surfers rejoice. More south swells! April 13thA few days of really fun surf coming through here in Dadonghai. Yesterday was the peak of the swell. It got up to nearly head-high, and was lining up really well in the far east corner of the bay. Lots of lefts and rights coming through. The better waves were lining up to allow for three or for turns. Dadonghai really doesn't get much better than that. A few pics are up on the homepage. We also got some decent video for the next newsletter. Today is back down to just about belly high. After this dies by tomorrow, we then have tiny east swell for the next week. Nothing great. But our summer season is off to a good start. |
