brendan's blogApril 5thHello dear readers. Sorry for the lack of updates recently. Today was awesome at Houhai, says Dahai. About as good as it gets there, with a light offshore wind, and up to shoulder-high on the sets, lining up really well. We've got a south bump coming in the next few days. Surf in Dadonghai! Can't beat it. Even if it's garbage! March 21stSmall waves continue on east coast. By Tuesday, it should be a little bit bigger (still longboard wave though). But the good news is that by Thursday, we should get a strong enough NE swell to get the point breaks going. We are happily surprised to see another NEer coming through, as it is pretty late in the season. Below forecast is for Thursday March 25th.
In other news, I am starting my three month Stand Up Paddleboard project. I am going to take a distance paddle (at least 45 minutes, progressing into longer and longer) three times a week for three months, to really see if SUP enthusiasts are correct in saying that it is the best workout. Matt and myself recorded our weight and other body measurements, as we will compare them at the end of the three months. Perfect weather for it these days, coming into spring. It will be gorgeous for a month before it gets oppressively hot and humid. March 16thWe had some okay surf in Dadonghai this last weekend, at about chest-high. I was up in Haikou doing the Ironman 70.3. Eight hours of pure brutality! See me at the end below. Coming up, we've got not too much! Look for some small surf in the coming few days out on the east coast. Good weather, so should be some good days for some mini mal riding in the sun.
March 7thThat was a good amount of fun over the last few days. Some video footage of the first day on the homepage, and we have a bunch more footage coming. Thanks Pablo. Size is down a bit today, and doing that stupid thing where it gets a bit big outside and then crumbles over, only to mush itself out. Really poorly shaped sand and a full tide. We are still looking good for Tuesday and Wednesday. If you are free, come on down. This will probably be the last NE of the season. March 4th, 2010It's coming in pretty fat at high tide this afternoon, but there is definitely a pulse in the water. Apparently I missed a really good session yesterday evening. I'm hoping it will glass off in the evening today as well. February 28thStill some small surf coming through here in Dadonghai. Today was about belly-high and pretty sloppy. But it was jacking up when it hit the sand bar, and tons of fun flying down the line on quick top to bottom waves. My 6'0 fish was the perfect board for those conditions. Look for more south swell coming for the next few days, and long term, it looks like we might get a strong NE swell. We could definitely use one! Stay tuned. February 23rdYesterday was pretty goog out in Houhai. Belly-high waves peling beautifully along the sand bar. Perfect time for some mini malibu fun. We had light south winds, which were great for the wave shape. And these south winds mean that again we will have be getting a south bump in the coming days. Our second small south swell for February. Really really odd, but it means surf right in front of our shop here in Dadonghai, which we will never complain about. February 18thWe had a good day yesterday at Riyuewan. Super clean lines coming through. Only about belly-high. Really fun longboard day. Today will be a bit more pumping out there. February 12thSmallness for the next few days, but we have a NEer forecasted towards the end of next week. Too early to get excited yet. Chinese New Year comes and so do the crowds. Too many people around. February 12thSmall waves for both the east and south coasts today. Yesterday actually got prety decent in Dadonghai. It was about rib- to chest-high on the sets, pretty clean. Nothing left for DDH tomorrow, as we see an increase in size on the east coast. More Houhai waves kids! Nothing special, but at least we can ride. This is today in Dadonghai. |
