3/11/06 Longlou ??

??????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

??????????????????????????????????

I was a little dissappointed on Friday. I was hoping for some overhead surf, but I think the swell from Paeng had already started to fade. The surf was still pretty good. Had a few head high bombs, but nothing was lining up that well. I took the bus down to Wenchang, and then another to Longlou, after work on Friday. I met up with Jose, Hiroshi, and Hirsohi's friend Yohei, visiting from Tokyo. After they left, I got a room at the hotel so I could surf Saturday as well.

The spot at Longlou is pretty cool. An empty beach, a few seafood restaurants, and simple hotel. I got the price down to 70 RMB for the night. Next time I'll try for 60. Much more convenient than Moonlight Bay, which is completely remote and deserted save for the few cement houses of the local fishermen. I had a few meals at one of the Longlou restaurants. Nothing beats following a good session with a 20 RMB half kilogram of crab.

I succesfully had my class schedule changed, so now I work five-hour days Monday through Wednesday, and have the rest of the week off. And I've been putting in over 40 km on my bike going to and from classes, which will keep me fit between sessions. I'm not in the same surfing shape I was six months ago, where I could put in a few four-hour sessions a few days straight. After the two-hour session on Saturday morning, I was done. Fell asleep on the busride home.

I think I'll head down to Wanning come Thursday. Forecasts show there should be another head-high swell coming through.

On a technical note, I will switch to using the international naming convention for typhoons. I had called last week's typhoon Paeng, which I think was the Filipino name for it. Cimaron was its name under international convention.
