February 18th

We did end up getting a south pulse over this last weekend. Not good waves by any means, but it's just so much fun to surf in Dadonghai, with all our friends hanging out on the beach. I was riding the SUP all day Saturday and Sunday. Love the paddleboard, as you can get into anything with it.

There should be some decent waves on the east coast today, but it won't last for too long before we're back into the same early spring pattern of small NE swell. Looks like we have a chance of another small south push torwards the weekend. Another weekend of hanging on the beach in Dadonghai, having a blast surfing waist-high mush?

February 10th

Still a little bit of an east push coming through. By Saturday, things get a bit strange with a southeast pulse coming though. Last year we saw the first south push in mid-April. To get one in February is a bit mad. On the 15th, a low will jump over the Philippines and move east towards Vietnam. It might be a decent swell generator for our south-facing spots as long as it doesn't move to quickly into land. Also, we have the makings of another proper NE swell coming down along China's east coast and into the South China Sea. It's early still, but this swell is looking like a typical noreaster, which means we are back on for the Shimei spots.

This bump got in today, and it got up to head-high in Riyuewan today. Houhai was pretty decent today as well, with some super glassy waves earlier in the day. Had to avoid the closeouts but I got some good rides. But this bumo should be gone by tomorrow, and then we're back to waiting again. The forecast is showing some really funky patterns. Getting a bit of a southeast pulse later on in the week. We usually don't see anything like that until April. Really odd. I would like to surf in Dadonghai again soon though. Maybe a decent south swell in February or March??

February 6th

Ugggghh. We've had unseasonably warm weather, and the higher pressure is really hurting the wave production. Small eastern swell coming through, but we aren't seeing any strong NE systems developing. After a flawless November to mid-January, we've really been hurting recently. It's too early to call it quits for the NE swells completely, but for the short-term, not looking good.

Feburary 3rd

I wish I had something better to report, but there's still no sign of a fat NE swell on the horizon. East-facing spots will be rideable, but nothing too special. Weather is great, the waves aren't.

January 31st

Still small scale surf coming through. We'll get a bit of a push tomorrow and Tuesday but not quite enough to get the Shimei spots going. Houhai has been pretty fun the last few days. Houhai is best when there'snot too much swell around. Nice belly-high longboard waves.

January 23rd

We've got a quick swell hitting tomorrow with leftovers into Sunday. Then we're back to another lull. There will still be enough of an east push to keep some waves around at the east-facing beaches though.

January 19th

The great surf stuck around after the contest period, with the following four days all bringing head-high surf. Now we are entering what looks to be the worst lull of the season so far. It could go pretty tiny or a few days as we wait for the next NE swell to come in on the 24th or 25th.

January 7th

I finally got a surf in yesterday at Riyuewan. It was one of the worst days this season, but still fun enough at shoulder-high and lining up decent enough. Real short period though.

Looks like we are on for the contest this Saturday, with the swell peaking then. It's getting up to a 3.6 meter swell at nine seconds. That means easily overhead at Nanyanwan. The surf gods must like us. Looking forward to seeing all you guys and girls. Should be a great time.

Happy New Year to everybody. This is my third fall/winter season in Hainan, and it's probably been the best so far. November and December were both really consistent, offering a ton of head-high and over days.

The contest dates of the 10th and 11th are just now coming into the long-term forecast range. Looking good so far, in the twelve-foot range. Fingers crossed for a god contest swell.
